School Nurses Autism Packets |
| |

We are so pleased to be able to provide school nurses with information about autism and the specific tools that will make their daily encounters with individuals with autism easier and successful.
Our Nurses Autism Packets contain six social stories based on the top six reasons children visit the school nurse. We have developed 6 individual social scripts that will provide the student visuals to connect with the experience they are having with the nurse and their present physical condition. Over time it is our hope that the student will become more aware and better able to communication their needs when not feeling well or injured.
- We have also included “Write in Scripts” for each of the social scripts. This tool can be used alongside the social script and can also be a tool that you or the teacher can write on, or also draw additional icons that apply to that student’s individual situation. They can and should be photocopied and sent home with the student so that the family can talk with their child about the situation after the fact. We also like the write in scripts because you can add steps and/ or precautions you would like for the student to follow after they leave your office/school.
- For the hearing and vision tests we thought a visual support would be helpful. We put in the lines as we don’t know the exact procedure each individual nurse uses for the exams. This is also a tool that can be photocopied and sent home with the student to communicate to the parent that their child participated in the hearing and vision test and how they did.
- Over time, all of these forms can be a great way to track a student’s participation and progress with individual wellness, understanding, and social responses to medical care in the school setting. Generalization of these skills to their Primary care medical visits would be a BONUS!!
- We have also carefully selected an assortment of sensory based items for children to use while waiting or during examinations. Our favorites are the Mood Dudes. This multi-cultural selection of mood based faces display emotions that can be used to create smiles or determine pain. We also include a water timer that serves not only to prepare a child for how long something may take but also provide a visual stimulation for them while they wait. Each of the sensory based items has been chosen to compliment the student’s sensory diet.
- We felt it was also very important to include some information about autism. You will find an overview of the disability, updated facts regarding the prevalence, a pain chart and a list of common characteristics. Unlike ten years ago, today there are many books about autism available. We have compiled a list of our favorites for you in a nurse’s specific autism education book directory which you will also find in your packet.
