Some of you may know by now that the Autism Alliance
of MetroWest, Inc. has created a video tape along with a curriculum
to train first responders. What you may not know is how successful
these trainings have been. To date we have trained Natick and Framingham's
fire departments as well as Metro West EMTs and hospital staff. We
have been repeatedly asked back to do additional trainings and have
just recently been awarded a second grant from the Metro West Community
Health Care Foundation to provide first responder trainings in all
the fire and police departments in Metro West. We are looking forward
to coming to your town and providing this training to your local fire
and police departments. With our training we also provide first responders
with our information notebook. The notebook contains contact information
about autism, reading suggestions, and bio forms. Bio forms are forms
for you and for your children. It is important for your local first
responders to have good information about your children. Not only
the color of their hair but the medicine that they may be on and where
they might go if they wandered off. Many of you may think that your
child is not at risk. If your child has autism, they are at risk and
the higher functioning child is at even greatest risk. Not too long
ago a parent told me that they didn't think they needed to fill out
the bio form because their child was so high functioning, that they
would never need the services of first responders. Then while her
child was at school, his class went inside from recess. Her child
decided on his own to go back out to the playground. No one noticed.
This child was outside, alone for only 5 to 10 minutes. Luckily he
didn't wander off.
Will you and your child be so lucky? Of course we hope so, however
the more information our first responders have about our children
the better off everyone will be. So we urge you to please complete
your bio forms and forward them to your local fire and police stations.
They will be available on line as a down load as well as through our
office if you should need another. To see if your town will be receiving
our training check out the list on page four.
If you would like more information regarding our trainings we will
be hosting a mock training session for families and the general public.
This session will be held Thursday, January 29th,
from 7:00 to 8:30 at the Morse Institute
Library in Natick. Everyone is welcome. We hope you will
attend and you can experience the training that your local fire and
police will be receiving.
