A very deserving group of kids from the Autism Alliance of MetroWest had the experience of a lifetime on Thursday, April 2, in celebration of World Autism Awareness and Acceptance Day. This year the Boston Celtics observed the occasion by “rolling out the red carpet” for siblings of children with autism – boys and girls who rarely get the spotlight and who are often the greatest champions of their brothers and sisters. Most of the siblings are past or present members of the Autism Alliance’s SibShop program.
Celtics star Evan Turner and former Celtic Leon Powe welcomed the group to their training facility. Kids got the chance not only to shoot hoops with the players but also to play ping pong and air hockey, enjoy pizza and treats, take pictures, and collect autographs.
Adding to the excitement was seeing the event highlighted in the Boston Globe and on the Celtics Instagram page in the days following.
Special thanks to the Boston Celtics and their partner America’s Compounding Center for shining the spotlight on autism siblings and giving them a day they’ll never forget.
